Every SEO conversation this year has circled the same statistic. AI Overviews appear, organic clicks fall by 61%, and the golden age of search traffic is over. That number is real and I will show you the study behind it. It is also no longer the whole story. In early 2026 the same research team watching those declines reported something nobody predicted. Click-through rates on AI Overview searches started climbing back.

That twist is why this page exists. Most AI statistics roundups collect the scariest numbers they can find because scary numbers get shared. The data worth acting on is more interesting than that. Here are the 2026 figures that actually change decisions, each with its source named.

AI Search Adoption at a Glance

The headline figures to hold on to:

  • 2.5 billion monthly active users for Google AI Overviews and over 1 billion for AI Mode (Google, May 2026). Two years ago this was a search experiment. Now it is one of the largest content surfaces on the internet.
  • Around 20% of Google searches trigger an AI Overview today, ranging up to 37% depending on the country and sample (SeoProfy, 2026). Coverage is the single biggest variable in every AI traffic forecast.
  • 592 million monthly active users on the ChatGPT mobile app (Statista, February 2026). Mobile alone. Desktop and API usage sit above this number.
  • 58.5% of US Google searches end without a click to any website (SparkToro/Datos zero-click study, 2024). This predates AI Overviews going mainstream, which tells you the zero-click shift was already underway.
  • Organic click-through rates on AI Overview queries fell 61% in the largest tracked dataset (Seer Interactive, 15-month study). The stat everyone quotes, and it deserves its citation.
  • And the same dataset shows CTR on those queries recovering from 1.3% to 2.4% between December 2025 and February 2026 (Seer Interactive, 2026 update). The footnote most roundups leave out.
Read those last two together. The impact is real. The trend is moving.

Google AI Overviews by the Numbers

AI Overviews went from experiment to default in under two years. Coverage estimates vary by methodology, which is worth knowing before you quote any single figure. Industry trackers put prevalence at roughly 20% of Google searches, with some countries reaching 37%. Broader samples push higher, and narrow ones sit lower. Treat "one in five searches" as the honest centre of the range.

Google's own May 2026 figures are not estimates. AI Overviews passed 2.5 billion monthly active users, and AI Mode crossed 1 billion monthly users within a year of launch. Alphabet told investors in July 2025 that AI Overviews were driving over 10% more queries globally for the question types they cover. More queries, fewer clicks per query. That combination is the new economics.

Industry mix matters too. Health-related queries trigger AI Overviews in over 60% of cases. Informational topics dominate. Local and transactional searches still lean traditional, which is why map pack work has not lost its value.

The practical way to use coverage numbers. Check your own search console data for the queries where you appear and see how many carry AI Overviews. Your portfolio's coverage rate is the number that matters for your traffic model, not the global average. A local services business might see 10% coverage on its money queries. A B2B software publisher might see 40%. Same internet, different economics.

ChatGPT and the Assistant Wave

The ChatGPT mobile app reached 592 million monthly active users by February 2026, up 3.6% in a quarter (Statista). OpenAI's own Signals data from June 2026 shows adoption widening across age groups and deepening by task. Early usage was dominated by drafting emails. Today it includes research, product comparison and local recommendations. That last category is the one that should interest anyone who sells services.

The assistant layer is where search behaviour quietly changed. Asking ChatGPT "who are the best accountants near me" is a search. It just does not show up in your ranking reports.

Voice assistants complete the picture. Siri, Google Assistant and Alexa now route many of their answers through the same large language models, which means a spoken question about local services draws on the same citation pool as ChatGPT. In my own tracking, voice-triggered queries show up as AI feature impressions in Search Console. The line between voice search and AI search has effectively disappeared. Optimising for one optimises for the other.

AI Search Adoption by Industry and Region

The adoption picture is uneven in ways that matter for strategy. Coverage of AI Overviews skews hard toward informational topics. Health leads at over 60% of queries. Finance, technology and how-to content follow. Local services, trades and transactional searches still run on the traditional results page and the map pack.

Regionally the picture shifts again. US and UK markets see heavy AI Overview coverage on research queries. Spain leads European business adoption of AI at reported rates between 50% and 61% of companies depending on the study, and Spanish firms name governance as the top barrier to generative AI. If you serve one market, study that market's numbers. Global averages will mislead you.

The Click-Through Story Changed in 2026

Now the part everyone quoting the doom statistics has missed.

Seer Interactive ran what is probably the most rigorous CTR study in the industry. 3,119 search terms across 42 client organisations and 25 million organic impressions tracked over 15 months. Their finding was stark. When an AI Overview appears, organic click-through rate falls from 1.76% to 0.61%. That is the 61% everyone quotes. Ahrefs measured a comparable 58% decline. Pew Research found users click a traditional result 8% of the time when an AI Overview is present versus 15% when it is not. And SparkToro and Datos documented that 58.5% of US searches already ended without a click back in 2024.

Then in early 2026, Seer published an update that should change how you read every statistic above. After 18 months of decline, the trend reversed. Organic CTR on AI Overview queries climbed from a floor of 1.3% in December 2025 to 2.4% in February 2026. The decline did not just level off. It turned around.

Nobody knows yet how far the recovery goes. Users may be learning to click through for depth. Google may be refining when Overviews show links. What the data does support is a strategy shift. The panic phase is over. The optimisation phase has started.

Three hypotheses explain the reversal and all three point the same direction. Users learned that Overviews answer the easy version of a question and click through when the stakes are real. Google adjusted which queries trigger summaries. And publishers got better at structuring pages worth clicking. None of those hypotheses rewards giving up on search. All of them reward better answers.

What Gets Cited in AI Answers

If clicks are the pressure, citations are the response. When an AI assistant answers a question, it names sources. Being one of them is the new ranking.

Here is where first-hand data beats every roundup. I track AI citations in Google Search Console's Generative AI reporting for my own sites and client sites. Over the 28 days I last measured in detail, AI features generated 204 impressions across 44 pages, growing 66% month over month in weekly trend. The pages winning citations were not the highest-ranking ones. They were the ones with clear answer blocks, fresh statistics and comparison structures. One insurance guide earned 21 AI citations while sitting on page one of the traditional results. The pattern is consistent. Answer-shaped content gets quoted.

What the 44 pages had in common is worth listing. Each led with a direct answer before the detail. Each carried named sources and specific numbers. Each covered one question thoroughly instead of five loosely. And each had clean structure that a retrieval system could quote without mangling. That is a low bar for writing and a high bar for discipline.

Citation patterns across the industry research say the same thing. AI systems favour pages with clean structure, named sources and quotable statistics. My guide to LLMO covers the discipline, and the practical steps to get cited in Google AI Overviews are written from that operator experience.

AI Adoption in Business and Marketing

The enterprise numbers explain why search budgets keep moving toward AI even as the click data wobbles. Marketing teams report 73% adoption of AI tools in their workflows. Spain leads Europe on business AI adoption, with 2026 reports putting usage at 61% of companies. The country's statistics office (INE) measured 21.1% of firms with 10 or more employees using AI in early 2025, nearly double the prior year. Deloitte's 2026 Spanish study found 49% of companies name regulation and governance as the main barrier to generative AI adoption. Adoption is not the constraint anymore. Governance is.

How to Track Your Own AI Search Numbers

Stop relying on roundups for your decisions and start measuring your own surface. Three places to look. Search Console's Generative AI report shows impressions and page-level citations from AI features. The queries report shows which of your searches carry AI Overviews above your listing. And asking ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Mode the questions your customers ask tells you plainly whether you appear in the answer.

Run that review monthly and track three numbers. AI impressions, pages cited, and which competitors show up beside you. It is a one-hour routine, and it beats any industry average for deciding what to do next.

Two questions worth adding to the review. What changed in your citation count in the last 30 days, and which pages gained or lost AI visibility. Movement matters more than level. A page gaining citations is a format worth repeating. A page losing them usually points at stale statistics or a competitor with fresher data.

What the Numbers Mean for Your SEO

Three practical reads from the dataset.

First, stop optimising for clicks alone. In a world where 58% of searches end without a click and AI Overviews cover a fifth of queries, impression share and citation share matter as much as CTR. Track the Generative AI report in Search Console. If you are not being cited, that is a strategy problem.

Second, the recovery trend rewards answer-shaped content. Pages built around clear definitions, sourced statistics and honest comparisons are what both clickers and AI systems reward now. That is a content standard, not a trick.

Third, the economics are shifting up the stack. As execution work automates, the value moves to judgement and accountability, which is exactly what my comparison of AI SEO agents vs SEO agencies works through. And when you are budgeting for any of this, the SEO pricing statistics and the SEO pricing calculator give you the market numbers.

Fourth, budget follows measurement. Teams that track citation share move spend toward content formats that earn both clicks and quotes. Answer blocks, original statistics, comparison pages. That is the cheapest reallocation in the plan, because content you already have can be restructured rather than replaced.

Frequently Asked Questions

What percentage of searches show AI Overviews?
Industry trackers put it at around 20% of Google searches, with some countries reaching 37% depending on the sample. Google confirmed AI Overviews passed 2.5 billion monthly users in May 2026. The honest read is one in five searches, growing.

Is AI search adoption still growing in 2026?
Yes, on every measured dimension. AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users within a year. ChatGPT mobile reached 592 million monthly users by February 2026. Business adoption keeps climbing. What changed in 2026 is the click-through trend, not the adoption trend.

Do AI Overviews reduce website traffic?
They reduce click-through rates substantially for queries where they appear. The largest study measured a 61% decline. However, the same data shows partial recovery in early 2026, with CTR on those queries climbing from 1.3% to 2.4%. The impact is real and the trend is no longer one-way.

How do I get my business cited in AI answers?
Answer-shaped content with clear structure, sourced statistics and consistent business data. AI systems quote pages they can parse cleanly. Tracking your Generative AI report in Search Console shows which pages already earn citations.

Is AI search replacing traditional SEO?
No. It is adding a layer. Google still handles billions of queries with traditional results, the map pack still drives local business, and the 2026 CTR recovery suggests users use both. The winning strategy covers classic rankings and AI citations together.

How many people use ChatGPT?
The ChatGPT mobile app reached 592 million monthly active users in February 2026 (Statista), and OpenAI reported broadening adoption across age groups in its June 2026 Signals data. Desktop and API usage sit on top of that.

Which industries get the most AI Overviews?
Health and informational topics lead, with health queries triggering AI Overviews in over 60% of cases. Finance, technology and how-to content follow. Local services and transactional searches still lean on traditional results and the map pack.

How long does it take to get cited in AI answers?
There is no fixed timeline and no guarantee. Pages with clear answer blocks and fresh data can appear in AI citations within weeks of publishing. In my own tracking, new answer-shaped pages began appearing in the Generative AI report within a month. Authority and consistency shorten the wait.

What is the difference between AI search and traditional search?
Traditional search returns a list of links and you choose. AI search returns a synthesised answer with sources, and the assistant chooses which sources to name. Both rely on the same foundations of crawlable, trustworthy content. The difference is whether you get ranked or quoted, and in practice you want both.
